David Quinn fired as Sharks head coach |

The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that they’ve fired head coach David Quinn, following the team’s last place finish.
Quinn exits the organization after just two seasons, holding a 41-98-25 record across 164 games with the Sharks.
The firing itself didn’t come as a huge surprise, considering Mike Grier was noncommittal about Quinn returning a couple days ago. Quinn was Grier’s first coaching hire, when he took over as general manager in 2022.
In regards to some thoughts on this: it’s pretty tough to expect Quinn to have guided the Sharks to better results. He was given a terrible roster to work with, and while that’s still the result of a necessary and overdue rebuild, Quinn should’ve got more leeway. I’m not entirely sure this looks great on Grier as a result, hiring a coach just to really not give him much of a chance at all, and look for another replacement shortly after.
At the same time, part of it could come down to coaching candidates available. With the likes of Jay Woodcroft or even Todd McLellan amongst the head coaching candidates this offseason, the Sharks could have a chance to upgrade. The reality is Quinn’s NHL track record was mixed at best, and while he didn’t get much of a break, the team does have the ability to go after one of the big names available this summer.
As of now, I think it’s difficult to feel strongly one way or the other about Quinn’s firing in terms of how it’ll affect the team’s future. We’ll see in the next little while if the Sharks are able to use the opportunity to bring in a top coach.
