Is Hronek now “not likely to re sign” in Vancouver? |

Offer sheet thresholds were released and an interesting trend on former Red Wing defender Filip Hronek has been developing. For most of the year the talk was that Vancouver should have no problem signing him to up to 7.5m. That number was reduced last month to 7 million. Now, at least in the article above, he’s listed as “unlikely to sign” alongside of Necas. So, what happened?
The pressure in Vancouver continues to build. Beyond that, the real numbers of what players want and internal discussions are brining a different glimpse. We saw Tampa take a chunk of cap on bringing McDonaugh (corrected, thanks to a great reader!) back which left about 5m to sign Stamkos and the team is rumored to be looking to clear space. In Hronek’s case, either the estimated 23m in space with 15 players signed isn’t enough for what they want to do or the team has decided to go a different direction.
Last summer Lindholm (also needing a new deal) was rumored to be a potential trade out of Calgary. I had a fan quote from a different source that he wanted to stay in Calgary. Lindholm ended up moving on as Calgary retools. As for Hronek, this is going to be an interesting watch. The team can go to arbitration and see how it goes or trade his rights. Personal opinion - the open market is going to have some hard reality for non marquee players. Not just in terms of cap, but in perceived value. The talking point seems to lean toward 4 year deals with hopes of a significant cap rise.
At this point, Detroit needs a 2nd line RHD. I don’t know costs, but would you trade to bring Hronek back? He and Seider were a good right side tandem. Vancouver is without 1st and 2nd round picks. Reality also strikes that Detroit may need LTIR, retained deals or buyouts that add space for that player. As always, readers are what make this blog work. Thanks to all who stop by.
