The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that they’ve signed Macklin Celebrini to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Celebrini was selected first overall by the Sharks in last week’s NHL Entry Draft. While the selection of Celebrini was no surprise, it remained to be seen as to whether or not the forward would opt to go straight to the NHL, or return to the NCAA for one more year. His ELC carries a $975,000 cap hit.

With Celebrini deciding to join the Sharks right away, it certainly creates an interesting scenario for the Sharks down the middle of the ice. With Will Smith also turning pro in the same year, Alex Wennberg signed, Mikael Granlund coming off a great year, Nico Sturm as a depth center, and Logan Couture’s status unclear, there’s a likely scenario where we see one or more players moved to the wing.

Regardless, Celebrini joining the Sharks next season creates a lot more excitement around the team. With the mix of young talent being integrated into the roster, along with several veterans added, the Sharks already look a lot more competitive on paper.

Celebrini is poised to be a franchise cornerstone for the team, and next season will mark the first year of what should be a long and successful tenure in San Jose.
