Quick Hits: August 17, 2024

1) I'm headed shortly from the camp hotel at the 2024 Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp to the Class of 1923 rink, where there will be four on-ice practice sessions and two games today: Team Toyota (coached by John LeClair, Patrick Sharp and Andre "Moose" Dupont) vs Team Results Guaranteed (Danny Briere, Brad Marsh and Dave Poulin) is the first game, followed by Team River Rock (Mark Howe, Mark Recchi and Paul Holmgren) vs. Team Neumann (Ian Laperriere, Keith Jones and Bob Watson).

Last night was the opening reception, followed by Steve Coates emceeing a Q&A panel discussion with Bob "the Hound" Kelly, Dupont and Joe Watson. The three speakers, of course, focused on being part of the Flyers' championship-winning teams of 1973-74 and 1974-75.

In Dupont's case, the player was acquired by the Flyers from the St. Louis Blues (for Pierre Plante and Brent Hughes) midway through the 1972-73 season. What made the trade unusual was that the trade went down on the same day that the Blues played a home against the Flyers. The three players literally switched locker rooms not long before they had to suit up for warmups.

2) Today in Flyers History: August 17

* 1977: The Flyers sign rookie free agent Brian Burke to a contract. He will go on the play one minor league season for the Maine Mariners. Subsequently he'll move on to much more successful career in hockey management.

* 1984: Recently retired Hall of Fame center Bob Clarke, in his first stint as Flyers general manager, gets three players re-signed on this date in '84: defenseman Brad McCrimmon, defenseman Doug Crossman, and young forward Len Hachborn.

* 1998: Peter White, a perennial top scorer in the American Hockey League for the Philadelphia Phantoms, signs a three-year contract extension after back-to-back 105-point regular seasons and winning the Calder Cup championship with the Phantoms in 1997-98. He'd subsequently split time between the Flyers in the NHL and the Phantoms in the American League.

At the AHL level, White is a first-line and top power-play unit fixture. In the NHL, White plays a bottom-six role, mostly on the fourth line. In 104 games with the Flyers, White posts 31 points (10 goals, 21 assists).
