The timing is later than most people thought, but Sidney Crosby is remaining a Pittsburgh Penguin. He signed a two-year extension and I bet you can't guess what his cap hit is...

The Penguins will get Crosby at a discount much like they have for his entire career. He's wired differently. Instead of easily making more money he seems to be stuck on having the 8.7M cap hit.

“Sid’s work ethic, focus, character, and mastery of his craft are the stuff of legends to those inside of hockey. Yet, what makes Sid most special is that he actually surpasses that legend with his daily commitment to his craft and to helping the Penguins win,” Dubas continued. “His dedication to the Penguins through 2027 ensures that our franchise will have its Captain as we go through this phase of our project. Sid’s commitment reiterates our urgency to build a team around him that can return our team to contention and provide our players with Sid’s leadership and example of what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin.”

Clearly the hangup on the contract was not money. The term was what was holding things up because of the 35+ dynamic. It appears they've gone conservative with the term and as a result it is hard to see a scenario where the contract would hamper anything short or long term for the Penguins. It is a very team friendly deal and it comes from a player who has always been committed to the only team he has known.

It will also pay Crosby actual cash. Something the last deal was not doing. Crosby was down to 3M in actual money the past few years. This will be a nice healthy raise for him.

To the click bait sites and the people who were frothing at the mouth over a Sidney Crosby trade deadline bonanza ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The iconic captain is staying put right where he belongs.
