Just a quick note on former Wings GM Ken Holland. It sounds like he’s heading to Utah and as his son was just let go in Edmonton it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a reunion there.

Moritz Seider is in the fold and the collective sigh commenced. Not a hand wringing source of hair loss relief, more like, “my flight was delayed for 2 months but we’re good” type of relief. The 7 year deal feels like a very reasonable cap hit for the 2019 first rounder who quickly shot up the ranks as Detroit’s #1 Dman. Looking forward to seeing camp clips.

Stepping back from it all, a thought about the young players in the system hit me and it was one I shared with my wife. “Do you think they know how lucky they are to see some of these veterans?” The young players on this club will look up into the stands and see Steve Yzerman, Nick Lidstrom, Kronwall, Cleary, Draper, Fischer and this year’s draft class spent hours with Datsyuk. Of all the names it’s Lidstrom and Datsyuk that stand out right now. Kids born in 2005 and 2006 were treated to Youtube highlights and had time on the ice with a magician. I’m nearing 50 (far too quickly) and my jaw dropped for that opportunity. For the defensemen, I hope they get a chance to pick Nick Lidstrom’s brain. Pay for a trip to his favorite steak house and just sit and listen. A virtual surgeon in his precision, a mind that seemed to just see the game from the blue line as one of the greatest of all time.

For many, they may not fully appreciate what Detroit fans have been blessed with. Alumni that changed the game. Years of Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay being around and connecting the past and the present. Now the 4 cups many of us were blessed to see has birthed another generation of alumni who also happen to be in the offices. I’d love to see Fedorov come over for a practice (when his number is finally retired). Watch clips of the Russian 5, see him hold onto a puck with an elbow in his mouth defensemen trying to drag him down like a running back heading for the end zone. Skill that held up when things were a little less, um, polite.

Each of you who stop by have your own memories. There is something that will be with you throughout your lifetime as a fan. My own back and forth with a fan who had a great story to tell brought this into focus. As we watch the new iteration come together, if you have a memory or moment that seemed almost supernatural in your journey as a fan share it. These stories are what keep the game alive in a special way. The craziness of the pre season will soon ensue, let’s give a tip of the cap to those moments that kept us coming back.
