Post game thoughts:

Team Red really didn’t get much done on the scoreboard after a goal 24 seconds in by Debrincat until the shootout. Team White scored once in the first period heading into the special teams 2nd tied at 1. Team white dominated the scoreboard in the 1 minute power play rotation with 1 short handed goal (Motte) and 3 power play goals (2 for Dries, 1 for Edvinsson). Still, it’s training camp. You can go through and see some strong plays, but the overall feel was scrimmage.

The team will meet up with newly inked Seider as they practice before the first preseason game which will see Chicago (likely heavily represented by Rockford) come to town on Friday. In terms of camp overall, a few thoughts.

Edvinsson put on around 11 lbs over the summer. It’s good to see him building the frame and credited to avocados and conditioning. Mazur put on 17 lbs which is a big jump on a smaller frame. It must be good muscle weight as the team seemed pleased with what he put together in camp. Danielson also bulked up, didn’t get a number, and Berggren actually dropped a bit of weight similar to what Veleno did last year. He was apparently bombarded with tape of Crosby’s 2 way game and is being asked to step up defensively.

Kasper, Mazur and Danielson were said by Ken Kal to have “a chip on their shoulder” and are all trying to fight for a spot on a crowded roster that would put someone on waivers. Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is apparently much more of a coin toss on Grand Rapids vs. Sweden where Axel Sandin-Pellikka is playing in the upcoming season. ASP wants to see another big year overseas, though it begs the question on whether or not starting North American hockey would have been more beneficial to the offensive minded Dman. Player’s choice was another shot in Europe for the first round pick that was obtained using a part of the package obtained for Hronek from Vancouver.

Today’s contest did little to quell concerns about the blue line but again, it’s a massive mixed bag of players in camp. Cossa and Lyon looked pretty good in net, Talbot wasn’t as sharp and it’s hard to say how Husso looked. The screen/broadcast made everything a bit of a stretch.

One issue I’d written about at length was Kane’s demeanor after the Chicago and Washington wins toward the end of the season. He apparently apologized to LaLonde as he had gotten ill and was fairly gassed down the stretch. This year’s training camp saw him take full advantage of summer training and was his first non Blackhawks camp of his career. (Traded to NYR and started near mid season for Detroit after recovery from hip resurfacing).

Raymond had some good looks, but apparently the first practices after his flight over were rough. Larkin skated the puck strong but didn’t really create a ton against team White. Debrincat seems to either be on or off (opinion). He can disappear a bit when he’s not feeling it, we’ll see if preseason has a better showing as he’s slated for top line looks along with Larkin and Raymond.

Again, and I can’t stress enough, it is hard to garner a lot from camp. It’s nice to see some hockey again but these players know each other well. There was a bit of a scuffle with Soderblom and Johansson in the scrimmage but fairly low physicality overall as you’d expect. The grinders had the better looks with Mazur really skating hard.

Looking forward to Seider’s first presser and practice clips. The herd will thin out over the pre season until the final decisions are made. The 3 aforementioned rookies along with PTO Austin Watson were most mentioned as players looking to put someone on the wire and on the bus to Grand Rapids. We’ll see how it all shakes out.
