The Columbus Blue Jackets fall to the Minnesota Wild by the final score of 3-2 in regulation.

Period I

Matt Boldy came up strong for the home team with points on all three goals. The opener that was the Wild’s first goal of the season was credited to the youngster with two minutes left in the first. Swedes Marcus Johansson and Jonas Brodin had the first assists of the campaign.

Period II

The resurgence of Kent Johnson came alive for the Jackets as he recorded the first goal for their season two minutes into the second period. KJ’s beamer is his 23rd career NHL goal. The first primary assist for Columbus belongs to Cole Sillinger. Damon Severson obtains the first secondary assist.

Joel Eriksson Ek executed on the opportunity in front of him to get the home team the lead for the second and final time of the game. His first of the season was supported by Johansson and Boldy. Both players got their first multi-point game of the season.

Period III

Mats Zuccarello extended the Wild lead on the first powerplay goal for the club. Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov recorded the helpers on the final marker for the hosts.

Alternate captain Zach Werenski answered with a late powerplay goal for the Blue Jackets’ first powerplay goal of the season. Offseason extended forwards Yegor Chinakov and K. Johnson had the assists on Werenski’s 91st career goal.

Goalies

Filip Gustavsson allowed two goals on 33 shots against for a 0.939 save percentage. Remember when he came in Columbus trade rumors earlier this summer for Laine?

Elvis Merzlikins allowed three goals on 26 shots faced for a 0.885 save percentage. Anything below a 0.900 will be a losing affair in this league. Waddell is buying time for the eventual trade or buyout.

Players to Watch

Minnesota — Brock Faber — the big ticket extension for the Wild this summer was a +1 in 24:57TOI.

Columbus — Sean Monahan — the forward’s first game with Columbus and a U.S. based franchise was an emotional one but also a scoreless affair. Monahan had four shots on goal, was a -1, and had a minor penalty in his debut. The number one center had 19:35 of ice time in the coaching debut of Dean Evason.

CBJ 3 Stars of the Game
