On a highly entertaining Sunday afternoon matinee match-up, the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning by the score of 7-4. The Jets had 7 different goal scorers in the game.

First Period:

The Jets fell behind 1-0 when Brandon Hagel scored for the Lightning on a rugby scrum. The Jets challenged for goaltender interference as there was literally a Lightning player laying on top of Connor Hellebuyck when the puck went in. Surprisingly, the call on the ice was upheld and the Jets received the delay of game penalty. On the ensuing PP, Brayden Point scored to put the Lightning up 2-0. Vlad Namestnikov scored for the Jets 4 minutes later when Josh Morrissey found him on the backdoor. The first period ended with the Lightning up 2-1. The Jets seemed to be rattled for a bit after that challenge did not go their way.

Second Period:

The Jets got back to their game in the middle frame. Logan Stanley scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 2 with a slot shot on a screened Lightning netminder. Next, off of a Ryan McDonagh turnover, Mark Scheifele scored on a nice 2 on 1 give and go with Gabe Vilardi to put the Jets up 3-2. Mitchell Chafee tied the game at 3 just over a minute later off an odd man rush. The 2nd period ended with the game tied at 3.

Third Period:

Just 4 minutes into the final period, Stanley drilled Luke Glendening with a clean hard open ice hit. Zemgus Girgengsons challenged Stanley to fight afterwards and ended up getting the extra instigator penalty. On the ensuing PP, Alex Iafallo scored his first goal of the season to put the Jets ahead 4-3. Nearly 3 minutes later, Nikita Kucherov tied the game at 4 when Hellebuyck mishandled the puck. However, Dylan Samberg restored the lead for the Jets just a minute later with a point shot through traffic. Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti would add empty net goals for the Jets after that to make the final 7-4 in favor of the Jets.

Some takeaways from the game:

The Jets depth was on full display in this game as they got goals from 7 different players and none of them were by their leading scorer Kyle Connor.

On his empty net goal, Ehlers became the highest scoring Danish player of all time with 474 points. The previous leader was Frans Nielsen.

Another game, another PP goal for the Jets. The Jets PP has become quite the buzzsaw to begin the season. It is clicking at an absurd 44%.

That was probably the best game I've ever seen Logan Stanley play in his young career. In addition to stepping into the play and scoring his first goal of the season, his hard clean hit on Glendenning really got his teammates and the crowd going. Hopefully he can build off of this stellar performance.

A scary moment towards the end of the game when Connor was pulled from the game by the concussion spotter after he was hit in the head by Kucherov. Thankfully, in his postgame presser, Scott Arniel said that Connor was fine.

The Jets improved their league best record to 11-1. Their homestand continues Tuesday night when they welcome Utah to the Canada Life Centre.
