Detroit can’t score right now. The contrast to last season where they could score but seemed to need 4 or more to win. Husso played a good game, still winless on the season. As I texted with my hockey buddy, amongst some disagreements regarding what a coaching change could do, we both agree that players go into “business for themselves” as they continue to struggle putting together a full game. This felt dull, but the team was getting saves and getting looks. Terrible shot selections at times, but just shut down by a goalie who isn’t having a “shut down” type of season right now.

The phrase “going into business for yourself” spans entertainment. If you haven’t heard it much, it essentially means an athlete or actor just makes up their own schematic and it is usually done in a way that puts the individual above the collective. In this case, the systems don’t seem to be working so players get frustrated and just try to force something to happen. The loan goal was a positive example. Larkin can pull off a couple laps in the O zone and try to set up chaos. In the other areas of the ice, it usually seems to backfire. I.E., a simple PK (which has been better lately) has the goal of keeping the puck to the outside, the crease cleared, and get the biscuit out and a fresh set of killers on the ice. This year more than any I remember the PK (and defenders at full strength) will pass the puck deeper into the zone and toward the net. That shouldn’t be on the menu.

The 3rd period made me nervous as it seemed like Gus and Holl were getting a lot more ice time. Every time #56 touches the puck it feels like a potential disaster, especially in his own zone. Gustafsson should not be getting ice time. That sounds awful and cruel, but he just hasn’t worked out. You’re in a 1 goal game and that pairing was way too visible in the 3rd.

As for a coaching change, even one that would potentially be revamped after the year, someone has to get behind the bench that can take a team struggling and at least preach a system well enough to try and bridge the talent gap. One who will call a timeout or bench/boot a player who costs the team. LaLonde has a “soft touch” and it isn’t pulling the crew together. Someone who can simplify and minimize risks with essentially half of a roster.

In the end, another 1 goal regulation loss, at least it didn’t end with 43 seconds left this time. It feels like the organization needs to do something, anything, to at least throw a bone to fans. Let me know your thoughts. They showed ASP’s scoring in Sweden in relation to other U20s in history. He’s 7 behind where Seider was but tied with Hedman at 21 goals. He started the year at 19, and while it may not have had the hoped for impact, his presence in North America would be a welcome one.

1st Period goals:

At 10:48 the Avs scored first. 1-0

Shots: 10-8 DET
Score: 1-0 COL

2nd Period goals:

At 2:44 COL scores on the PP after Kasper heads off for hooking. 2-0 COL

At 18:13, Larkin skated the puck to the blue line and launched it at the net. Looks like it went off of Raymond’s chest. Take it. 2-1

Shots: 21-14 DET
Score: 2-1 COL

3rd Period goals:

No third period goals

Shots: 30-25 DET
Score: 2-1 COL
