The Pittsburgh Penguins are currently 15th in the Eastern Conference and have played more games than all but three teams in the conference. They are dead as far as playoffs are concerned. There are too many teams and too few games to make a go of it. If they somehow do make a legit push it will have been a historically good run from the team. Any pipedream of that happening was just made more difficult
Forward Jesse Puljujarvi has been recalled from @wbspenguins.bsky.social (AHL). Forward Evgeni Malkin has been placed on Injured Reserve.

Malkin suffered an undisclosed injury during the Seattle game on Saturday. To this point there has been no information given about what the injury is. All we know is that it is worthy enough for them to skip the day to day diagnosis and put him directly on the IR.
You can of course speculate (probably correctly) that it is Malkin’s left knee. He had a knee to knee collision with Chandler Stephenson which didn’t look great. There was no malice in what Stephenson did, just an unfortunate result.
Malkin had played in 47 out of the Penguins 51 games this year which came on the back of two straight 82 games played seasons. Given how his knee bent he is likely to miss a good chunk of time moving forward.
Given the Penguins place in the standings and the loss of Malkin we might be back on top five pick watch like we were earlier in the season. Getting a high draft pick would be ideal in what has been an unserious season as far as contending is concerned. The picture is very clear. The Penguins will be sellers. Things should start to pick up on that front moving forward.
