People get on my case because I have the NHL logo next to my name and not a Flyers logo. The reason is two fold...

A) Yes, I grew up a Flyers fan and will never root agianst them, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy or appreciate the other teams in the league. I love hockey...all hockey...not just the Flyers.

B) I blog about everyone.

That said, I am on a mission to help others learn about, understand and appreciate other teams in the league. So I'm going to be featuring videos every now and again to give you a peak into what makes that team or it's players special...

First up...

The Minnesota Wild

If that doesn't get you excited to watch the "Mountain Men" from Minnesota...check your pulse ;)

First period thoughts coming up...

********

Now there's something you don't hear at a hockey game very often...the Chinese National Anthem!

There was a Chinese Tournament here over the weekend and two of the teams were on ice for the start of the game.

Ceremonial drop of the puck...Colin Powell

Ok - sound guy needs to update the music...I was just brought back to High School by the tunes from Jock Jams...and the jumbotron is not very jumbo...

That was the bad news...the good news is that this place is full! I wasn't so sure about a Monday afternoon game, but the Islanders Faithful are ready to rock! They're cheering and chanting and stomping thier feet...I have no idea why I'm surprised, but I am!

Now to the game...

Both teams have traded quality scoring opportunities in close the with goalies more horizontal than vertical, but no one was able to bang the puck home...

Islanders had a great chance to get the first goal about seven minutes into the game...Ward was behind the net to play the puck and it went right out to the far circle, but the Islanders player wasn't expecting it and couldn't react fast enough to get it on net before Ward got back into position.

Just over six munites to go in the first...neither team has been able to get much going...lots of give/take-a-ways in the neutral zone and dumping and chasing.

That was boring period of hockey...not even a penalty

Here's to hoping the Second Period is much more interesting...

********

Second Period Thoughts...

Alright!!! Finally something to write about!
Islanders score!!! Hilbert with some great stickwork skating to the net flips a backhander past Ward...

Islanders up 1-0

I am loving the organist here! Plays some great tunes...

Half way through the game and still not one penalty called.

Carolina is starting to play more aggressive with the puck and rusing the zone more...

Islanders Score!!! Meyer strips the Hurricane defenseman as he enters the zone, brings it up us to Comeau, passes to Satan who sends a wrister past Ward

The Battle of the Tim's...Jackman and Gleason just kicked the snot out of each other taking turns up against the glass...lots of angst led to a pretty good fight and ....drumroll please...the game's first penalties!!

...although, they were matching so still no PP...

Carolina just had a great chance with DiPietro sprawled on his backside, the puck goes behind him but trickles wide!

Woah!!!! Our first infraction! Commodore for hooking...

The Second Period was definitely more interesting...Here's hoping the third is even better :)

********

Third Period Thoughts

Carolina Scores!!! Commodore sends one in from the near wall and it plays pinball before careening off an Islanders Dman and past DiPietro.

This game is definitely much more interesting now...must have been the time issue...most guys would have been taking their gameday nap at 2pm on a regular gameday and it's taken them until now to wake up and start playing with some energy!! Too bad there's only 15 minutes left in the game :(

Just over five minutes left and it's gotten boring again...

Lots of kids at today's game with the schools being closed for the holiday...I hope they enjoyed it and have lots of stories to tell when they get back to class tomorrow :)

Wallin Scores!!! Carolina ties it up!!! Wallin sends a slapshot through traffice that finds the twine...

58+ minutes for Carolina to get it's friest PP...Martinak for boarding...The Canes have FIVE forwards on the ice...

This one's headed to OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVERTIME!

********

The Isles started OT on the PK and just as it expires they take another one...

Canes score on the PP

Game over...

********

Ok, just got back from the rooms...all I heard in the Carolina room was how terrible the ice was..."completely embarrasing"...and how hard it was to get going in today's game because of the early start...

Carolina would have been lucky getting just one point out of this game - they played terrible. The only time they were able to get anything set up was in OT on the PP and it paid off.

The refs clearly didn't call a lot of things throughout the entire game and should have continued to call a relaxed game through OT. You can't allow the players to get away with something at one point in the game and not in another.

I'm doing some stuff with the High School All-Star game to benefit the Lighthouse Project...don't know if I'll be able to get you a full set of post-game quotes, but I will do my best

:)
