The Ottawa Senators begin the month of March 1-0-1 after defeating the San Jose Sharks in regulation and losing to the Washington Capitals in a shootout loss. The final score against the Sharks in Game 59 was 5-3; in Washington, D.C., on the day they announce their spring bloom sweaters, the final score was 5-4 in the shootout.

G59 v San Jose Sharks -- Stutzle Streak

The Ottawa Senators' losing streak ended at 5-straight games as the Senators defeat the San Jose Sharks by the final score of 5-3 to kick off the month of March.

Period I

Shane Pinto opened the scoring short-handed for the home team past the halfway mark of the frame for his 12th of the year from Ridly Greig.

Period II

The visiting Sharks' got two powerplay goals to get themselves the lead through 40.

Tyler Toffoli had his 22nd of the year to tie the game from rookies Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini five minutes into the middle period.

Just before the halfway mark, former Leafs' defender Timothy Liljegren had his fifth with the Sharks from Alexander Wennberg and Klim Kostin.

Period III

Ottawa roared back with two goals in a minute and 34 seconds apart.

Captain Brady Tkachuk had the tying goal on the powerplay for his 22nd of the season from Tim Stutzle and Jake Sanderson.

Stutzle had the go-ahead goal at the three minute mark for his 19th of the campaign from Greig.

Five minutes from that, David Perron ripped home the eventual game winner for his second with the Senators from Thomas Chabot and Drake Batherson.

Will Smith got his 10th career goal on the powerplay to bring his team within one from William Eklund and Celebrini.

Michael Amadio had the empty netter with a minute left in the game for his sixth with the Senators from Artem Zub.

Goaltenders

Vitek Vanecek had 27 save on 31 shots attempts for a 0.871 save percentage.

Linus Ullmark allowed 3 goals on 37 shots for a 0.919 save percentage.

Players to Watch

Tyler Toffoli stayed hot with his 22nd in a Shark's sweater.

Tim Stutzle kept his point streak alive at 11 consecutive games with his 19th goal and 42nd assist of the season.

G60 @ Washington Capitals -- Close Was Not Close Enough

Despite the mid-game comeback, the Ottawa Senators earned one of a possible two points in the final score of 5-4 in the overtime-shootout.

Period I

Connor McMichael continued his hot start just 101 seconds into the game with his 22nd of the campaign from defender Martin Fehervary and former Winnipeg Jets' forward Pierre-Luc Dubois.

PLD extended the home team lead for his 15th of the season from McMichael and ex-Leafs' defender Rasmus Sandin.

Period II

Tom Wilson got the third unanswered goal on the powerplay for Washington for his 27th of the regular season. Dubois and forward Dylan Strome had the apples.

The visitors got on the board late in the frame with Shane Pinto for the forward's 13th of the regular season from Jake Sanderson and Claude Giroux.

Period III

Giroux got into the goal department for his 12th of the regular season a minute and five seconds into the period on the powerplay. Sanderson and Tim Stutzle had the helpers.

Pinto evened the game with his second of the game and 14th of the year from Mike Amadio and Thomas Chabot.

Martin Fehervary got the go-ahead goal for his third of the year from Wilson and Alakesi Protas.

Captain Brady Tkachuk got the game-tying goal with a minute and 8 seconds remaining in regulation on the powerplay for his 23rd of the year from Stutzle and Sanderson.

Overtime

Ottawa kept pushing the chances with 3 shots to Washington's 1 in the extra five minutes of three-on-three.

Shootout

Dylan Strome was credited with the winner as he scored in the third round.

Goaltenders

Logan Thompson had 33 saves on 37 shots for a 0.892 save percentage.

Linus Ullmark had 37 saves on 41 shots for a 0.902 save percentage.

Players to Watch

Pierre-Luc Dubois, who is on my fantasy team, had a three point performance, including his 15th goal of the year; and two assists; his 36th and 37th of his first season in Washington.

Claude Giroux had a goal and assist; his 12th goal 27th assist of the season. He missed the final shot in the third round of the shootout.
