There’s been no lack of loyalty from Dylan Larkin when it comes to wearing the Winged Wheel. When Yzerman came to town, they waited a year before assigning the “C” to the Waterford native. Throughout the entire tear down and rebuild, Larkin has stood in front of the cameras and dealt with whatever was thrown his way. Frustrated at times, but certainly still pushing for better days.
The above embed was posted yesterday as we focused on the defense, and it was probably the first time that #71 let himself vent in front of the media. Larkin was visibly crushed when Bertuzzi was traded, but pushed through. The first 19 year old to make the team in a LONG time, Larkin has been something special for fans. 4 straight 30+ goal seasons and always pushing hard. Gets a broken neck, comes back. For the first time, it looks like the captain may have had enough.
Even with 2 days to cool off, Larkin let that frustration out in front of the cameras and it seems like it will either lead to a tough conversation or at least a further cooling off period. Teams were looking for first round picks, Detroit wasn’t in the place where that’s going to happen. Ken Daniels, in passing, mentioned that at least one team called about Marco Kasper. The rookie caught a lot of attention and now you have to wonder if teams will call about Larkin.
To be frank, it seems doubtful that this heads for a separation, but it should at least have the attention of Yzerman, McLellan and the staff. You do not want this carrying over into camp. Whether anyone wants it or not, the question about this clip will be asked and cited ad nauseam. For as many fans as I’ve heard call Larkin “overrated”, there would be no shortage of teams thinking of what he could bring to the table where he didn’t have to carry anyone.
Let me know your thoughts. Was this just a player allowing himself to be frank, or is this the start of a pivotal moment and some “campfire meetings”? Let me know your thoughts as the summer just got a little more interesting.
