So the big even that everyone was hyped for this weekend ended up being just that, hype. Other than Alexander Ovechkin I was very disappointed to see guys basically just do a shootout attempt. Yes, some guys did try other stuff including Getzlaf, but overall I felt the contest didn't deliver what I hoped for. The goalies should only be allowed to come a couple feet out in my opinion, allowing players a chance to pull of moves in the open ice instead of worrying about a pokecheck (Nabokov).
The other part I was disappointed in was that every single attempt was started from the blueline. I read the rules on the NHL media website, they were allowed to start their attempt wherever they wanted, but all chose the traditional route. Gaborik gathered speed which was nice, but didn't have the flash I was looking for. I just think it is sad that the video game "preview" of the event had better moves than the players attempts. My hats off to Alexander Ovechkin who WAS a crowd pleaser, but if this contest is to be used again (and I think it should) the players must come up with better tricks, and the goalies stay in the net and wait it out.
Congrats to Jason Arnott who had a very strong showing in both skills competitions he participated in. He was in the Finals for the Accuracy contest, and finished 3rd in the Hardest Shot. He did break the 100 mark which was quite impressive.
The best part of the night was probably the Young Stars game. Lots of scoring, Mike Emerick talking to the goalie in net (Legace) and everyone seemed like they were having a blast.
