The Road to Sen-dom
Hi there, my name is Gerry Bourdeau. You may remember me from such places as my old Bruin blog on this site, the forums on Hockeybuzz or that nasty incident last night on Rideau Street involving a misunderstanding about what kind of films the Bytown Cinema actually shows. I’ll be your new Sens blogger, if you’ll have me.
This first blog is going to be sparse on hockey info but that’ll change once I settle in a bit and learn something about the sport in question. I’m going to use this particular blog to explain what kind of tone the rest of my blogs will take (for those who are unfamiliar with my work), explain a bit about my history (it won’t be too boring) and give Bruin fans an explanation for my switching to writing about the Sens.
Ok, on to the first item on the list. When I wrote the Bruins blog, I wrote from the voice of a fan but I never actually insulted the opposing teams nor did I engage in obvious bias where clarity was required, unless I was shooting for comedic effect. I usually don’t write sensationalistic blogs (we’re all doomed!) and I try not to lose sight of the fact that the players are people too. So if I want to criticize the way someone is playing, it’ll usually be constructive or at least funny as opposed to being shrill. I am not going to try to replace Kevin Lee, nor could I emulate him if I was asked to, but instead I’m going to try to set a different tone for the Sens fans on Hockeybuzz.
I’ve lived in Ottawa for almost my entire life, except for three interesting and frozen years in Timmins ON, but I’ve been a Bruin fan for that entire time. I can’t hide it, nor would I want to as I’m quite proud of the black and gold, but I’m also going into this Sens blogging thing with the same excitement as I had during my Bruins blogging days.
To Bruin fans or anyone who read my last blog as the Bruin blogger (http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?blogger_id=91), I ought to tell you why I’m coming back and blogging for the Sens. Firstly, Eklund has my family. Secondly, I’ve been offered other inducements which make blogging interesting for me again. Thirdly, I don’t want to be typecast. And fourthly, I wanted to begin cheering for two teams that dislike the Habs. I’ll still be around the Bruin forums but most of my energy will be concentrated on the Sens blog. Writing for Boston was interesting as I had never been to Boston until last April. As the Sens blogger, I’ll hopefully have more direct access to the Sens organization and I can at least go see the team play live several times a year.
I have to thank Bruin fans for all their support over the last season and believe me when I say no team can ever replace the Bruins for me. That said, I’m really looking forward to writing for the team in my home town and getting to know another fan-base online.
To those Sens fans that just bothered to read my last blog as a Bruin blogger (and managed to stay conscious through it), I won’t be quitting on you anytime soon and we’re getting through this entire season together, barring my being run out of town. And, no, I haven’t given up on my metal-blues fusion music.
I guess it’s fitting that as I start my Senators coverage, their second game is against the Bruins. That’s going to be a tricky post-game blog to write but I can’t wait to try.
I really like what the Sens did in the offseason, getting tougher on the defensive end (at least on paper) and picking up Alex Auld, and I hope I can add to the pleasure Sens fans get in following their team all season.
I’ll check back in tomorrow night or Saturday morning with a breakdown of how the Sens looked against the Coyotes. Until then, if there are any questions, comments or heckles for me, I can be reached at
[email protected].
