Colin Campbell has been a lot of things during his tenure as the Dean of Discipline with the National Hockey League, but consistent isn't one of them.
There was a lot of talk going into the playoffs as to how Colin Campbell will handle game misconduct penalties, how he'll approach repeat offenders, and what kind of suspensions he will throw out.
It's my estimation that Vancouver's Andrew Alberts will be hearing from Colin Campbell about his brutal run on Brad Richardson, but quite frankly I have no idea how CC will react.
The play was pretty bang-bang, but Alberts did get right up on Richardson and the play was definitely penalty worthy, as Alberts left his feet to lay a bone-jarring hit on Brad Richardson against the glass. Richardson had beaten Alberts to a puck right alongside the glass, and Alberts had a full head of steam bearing right down on the Kings winger. Richardson was left bloodied, and Alberts was assessed a five minute boarding and ten minute game misconduct.
The fact of the matter is this hit will establish precedence with big penalties in the playoffs. If he walks, Campbell will be forced to hold back on future suspensions, and if he's hit hard, he'll have to hand out the same treatment to everyone, including all-stars.
Now, my question to you. Is the hit going to receive some supplemental discipline, or was Alberts five and ten a justifiable punishment as is?
