On Modano, the schedule, and rebuilding.

As I continue to get my Stars draft preview ready the news continues to come in. The Stars have yet to do anything significant this offseason, but yesterday "news" came down that I hoped we wouldn't have to consider this offseason.

Mike Modano said there is a 75% chance he will play next season, and there is a good chance it will not be with the Stars. After the storybook way he went out last season the mere idea that he would come back next season with anyone, let alone another club, is unfortunate. If you have any thought about coming back for 2010/11, you don't allow all of the celebration at years end last season happen, right?

This has been said in many places, and I will restate it here: don't. As great an ambassador for hockey as Mike has been, the idea of him wearing another sweater is wrong on many levels. Hopefully there is a meaningful management position somewhere in a new ownership group that will keep Mike around.

The schedule is now out for the 2010/11 season. The Stars open up in New Jersey on October 8th. The first home game will reportedly be on the 14th against the Red Wings. This season the Dallas ice will theoretically see Sidney Crosby AND Alex Ovechkin. Last time Pittsburgh came to town Crosby was out with an injury however. So we'll see.

In preparing my draft preview I've come across and idea about the Stars that is starting to annoy me. The idea that constantly pops up is that the Stars are a rebuilding franchise. They aren't.

The Stars are now two years removed from a Western Conference Finals appearance. They are hamstrung financially with an internal budget of about 45 million dollars. They have an established young goalie with injury issues. They have good depth up front in skill players, and some holes on defense. However, they aren't selling pieces off left and right or focusing on young players. They simply can't afford to add anything significant.

You can debate all day whether or not they SHOULD be rebuilding. I'd lean towards that for sure. However, they simply aren't rebuilding. They just haven't been very good for two years. It's semantics I suppose, but it was still annoying.

Stay tuned for the Stars draft preview.
