Czech Republic holds off Norway, 2-1

Buffalo - Marek Hrivik scores in overtime to push Slovakia past Germany in preliminary round action of the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship at HSBC Arena in Buffalo Monday night.

Coming off a disappointing loss to Switzerland on Sunday, Germany was firing on all cylinders from the opening faceoff peppering Slovakian goalie Dominik Reicicky with 16 shots in the first period. He saved all of them and they'd start the second period scoreless.

Just eight seconds into the second frame, captain Richard Panik would fire a wrister from the circle to put Slovakia up 1-0. Germany would continue to pressure and had the advantage of three power plays in the period, but weren't able to crack Reicicky until Norman Hauner pounced on a rebound to tie the game at one late in the period.

In the third, Slovakia kicked it into high gear looking to get the win in regulation firing 17 shots on Philipp Grubauer, but both goalies were sharp and the game would go to overtime.

With Thomas Brandl in the box for tripping, Hrivik would deflect a Panik centering pass to give Germany their second loss of the tournament despite putting up 48 shots on goal.

Germany will play Finland on Wednesday, December 29th at 3:30pm ET while Slovakia will play USA Tuesday, December 28th at 8pmET.
