Buffalo - Powered by two goals by Kyle Palmieri, USA defeated Slovakia 6-1 Tuesday night at HSBC Arena in Buffalo during preliminary action at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Palmieri got things going early in the first period by going hard to the net and redirecting a centering pass by Charlie Coyle. Two minutes later Jerry D'Amigo was hit hard along the boards by Petr Hrasko. He appeared to be unconscious for a bit, but skated off on his own power and later returned to the game. Hrasko was assessed a five minute major, a match penalty for contact to the head/neck area and faces a minimum one-game suspension.
On the ensuing power play, defenseman Jon Merrill unleashed a rocket from the blueline and Palmieri was right there to clean up the rebound for his second of the night.
USA would take a 2-0 lead into the locker room, but perhaps the bigger indication of just how dominate the Americans were at the start of the games, they also lead in shots on goal 22-1 after 20 minutes.
Just under four minutes into the second stanza and on the power play, Coyle earned his third point of the night with a shot from the goal line that went bardown and made it 3-0. Later in the period, Chris Brown works hard in front of the net and reaps his reward with a power play goal of his own to give USA a four goal lead.
Forty seconds later, Tomas Jurco gets Slovakia on the board, but it wasn't nearly enough. Just over a minute later, Drew Shore would go forehand, backhand, forehand, backhand turning a Slovak defenseman inside out before lifting one past Dominik Riecicky in jaw dropping fashion for a 5-1 USA lead.
Late in the second, Emerson Etem, who had been booed every time he touched the puck for calling Buffalo a ghost town on his twitter, found a way to earn some cheers as he fired a wrister that went just over Riecicky's shoulder to make it 6-1.
That would be the end of Riecicky's night as Juraj Holly replaced him in net. It would also end the scoring for the night, but not the drama. Midway through the third period, Martin Marincin hit Jason Zucker with a vicious elbow to the head that left Zucker crumpled on the ice. He was helped off the ice by his teammates and did not return to the game. Like Hrasko, Marincin earned a five minute major, a match penalty and will face at least a one-game suspension.
Neither team will play again until Thursday, December 30th. Slovakia plays Switzerland at 3pm ET while USA will face Germany at 7pm ET.
