Ultimate Set Build #5: 1996-97 McDonalds Pinnacle: 3D Goalie Subset

Here we are, back for another addition to the ongoing “Ultimate Set Build”, an attempt to build a set with a card from every mainstream hockey release, including sub-sets, parallels and oddballs!

Today’s addition comes in the form of the 3D Goalies of the 1996-97 McDonalds Pinnacle release. This was a 9 card subset (#’s 32-40) of the overall 40 card set.
While cards 1-20 were focused on 3D forwards, and cards 21-31 providing “full motion video” effects of star players in action, scoring goals and making saves, these cards looked at the star goalies in the league at that time. These included:

32 Jim Carey
33 Martin Brodeur
34 Trevor Kidd
35 John Vanbiesbrouck
36 Jocelyn Thibault
37 Ed Belfour
38 Felix Potvin
39 Damian Rhodes
40 Curtis Joseph

Yes, Roy was not included, but that does not mean he was missing entirely! Rather, he was included as part of the “full motion video” subset, explaining his omission here.
Now, rather than being true “3D”, these cards achieved this effect by mounting player pics on a textured plastic overlay and placing this over an action scene from a game, providing the appearance of depth rather than creating a true 3D effect, per se.

The back of the card was pretty basic in terms of info, with the basic 1-2 sentence blurb in English and French and stats from the previous year and the player’s career. A bit of a nice touch here was the framing in of the player headshot, whereby rather than just bordering off a symmetrical/geometric space for the picture, these cards incorporated a sloping, jagged edged, multicoloured break between the info portion and the photo, very much mimicking the edge of a broken piece of ice. A design element that adds both thematically and keeps what can be a very bland part of a card from in fact being so!

This is a regional set in the sense that it was distributed in Canada only, yet this doesn’t do alot to drive up prices on them. Most book for under a buck, a couple at a buck (Belfour & Joseph), while the Brodeur hovers around $4-$5.

Not bank breakers, but they were a nice spin on the regular card, providing something a bit different in appearance, card size (thickness), and depth. Nice variations on the old faithful, and another welcome addition to what was a winter tradition at Rotten Ronnies!

Make sure to check out the rest of the collection by clicking here. Additions will be made regularly so check back and watch the set grow!
