The Winnipeg Jets announced on Thursday that they have claimed Brett MacLean off waivers from the Phoenix Coyotes.

MacLean was taken in the second round (32nd overall) by the Coyotes in the 2007 NHL Draft. The 22-year old forward appeared in 13 games with Phoenix in 2010-11, picking up two goals and one assist in his first stint in the NHL since being drafted.

The 6-foot-2 winger spent most of last season with the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League. In 51 games played, MacLean registered 23 goals and 27 assists for 50 points.

MacLean was a standout player in the Ontario Hockey League. In his final junior season with the Oshawa Generals in 2007-08, MacLean led the league in goals (61) and finished second in points (119), one point ahead of John Tavares. MacLean was named to the OHL first all-star team that season.

The London, Ontario native is entering into a one-year, $735K deal. He will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

The Jets announced that MacLean will report to Winnipeg and join the team. In order to make room on the roster, the Jets have assigned Patrice Cormier to their AHL affiliate, the St. John's Ice Caps.

Cormier split time between the Atlanta Thrashers and the AHL's Chicago Wolves last season. In 21 games with the Thrashers, Cormier had a goal and an assist. In 11 games played with the Wolves, he had two goals and three assists.

The Moncton, New Brunswick native was selected in the second round (54th overall) by the New Jersey Devils in the 2008 Draft. The Thrashers acquired Cormier in the trade that sent Ilya Kovalchuk to New Jersey.

Cormier was the captain of Team Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championship, where he won a silver medal.
