Tyler Myers was benched for the first time in his brief NHL career on Monday night in Montreal. His coach had grown weary of telling Myers to protect the puck, get his big feet in gear, and to throw the body around, like he had in 09/10, and in the back half and Playoffs of the 10/11 season.
Myers was banished to the pressbox for a game to get his full attention. The message was recieved loud and clear. Myers came back from the benching with an anger and urgency in his game that we hadn't seen this season.
Poor Dainius Zubrus. He was expecting the Big Fella to go easy on a 50-50 puck in the Buffalo end. Instead, Myers smoked Zubrus with an exclamation point of a thundering body check. Zubrus was shaken up from the hit, but returned to the game after missing one shift. Myers dodged a suspension for the aggressive check.
Today, Myers spoke about the hit and his gratitude for the league not suspending him for it.
