What would a hockey game be without the fans looking for a suspension? Well it wouldn’t be much of a game now would it. I figured I’d get this up now so that I wouldn’t have to talk about it tomorrow.
Hodgson Hit
The Foligno hit on Hodgson was not a penalty and I don’t think it deserves a suspension. It was a hockey play and it’s unfortunate that Hodgson got hit in the head and injured. Here’s why I see it this way.
Foligno did not charge on the play, nor did he leave his feet. While Hodgson’s head was the principal point of contact, the only reason it was, was because Hodgson was falling down. I don’t feel there was enough time to avoid the hit, but it did appear to me that he let up as much as he could. I have a bit of a problem Foligno leading with his arms in a pushing motion, but I don’t think that enough to suspend him for. I also liked the compassion Foligno showed towards Hodgson. He looked genuinely concerned for Hodgson’s health after the hit and appeared to check to see if he was ok after the hit.
Chris Neil
How Neil didn’t get a charging penalty for the two runs at Sweatt and the mugging of the twins in the first I’m not sure. But the Head shot on Burrows was to me the same as the one Leino just got a game for. Neil clearly led with his elbow and deliberately made contact with Burrows head. That to me is ahead shot and if we are going to give Leino a game we have to give Neil a game.
I guess the bright side though, is that if the Senators want to play Neil more then Spezza the Canucks will be scoring a lot more.
Kesler Hit
The Kesler hit I had a problem with. On this hit I think Foligno could have let up on but instead he took advantage of a player in a valuable position. I think this hit is suspendable more because of the lack of respect that is shown to Kesler. I feel Foligno could have let up and avoid the hit all together, but instead he chose to follow through. On his follow through it looks like the head/back was the point of contact. I would give him a game as well if for no other reason then hitting two guys in the head deserves something.
If nothing is done, I think this game sends a clear message to the Canucks that this is open season. While we may have one of the more talented teams in the league, I’m not sure they we survive the season if every game they are getting run.
I wonder what Georges Laraque is up too?
Enjoy the rest of the game, I’ll have the game wrap up tomorrow.
