After dropping the last three games, the Denver Cutthroats got a badly needed a win 5-3 against the Fort Worth Brahmas.
The Cutthroats came out fast and energetic, pushing the tempo but their clumsily, leading to a few odd-man rushes for the Brahma’s. Luckily for them, Kent Patter son was big early to keep it tied at zero.
After Brad Smyth negated A Cutthroats powerplay, the Cutthroats went to work to score on the ensuing 4-on-4 with J.P Chabot tipped a shot from Quincey behind Braha’s goaltender Larry Sterling to take a 1-0 lead.
Marcus Lauridsen would make it 2-0 minutes later corralling a Kyle Quincey shot that richocheted off the back boards and out into the slot.
Patterson was strong in the first making some huge saves, including one to knock away a rebound with Lutes in the box for a hook that saved a sprawled-out Patterson from a goal.
Brady Smyth would atone for his penalty, taking a cross-ice pass from Schwab and shooting it up and over the blocker of Sterling into the back of the net, giving the Cutthroats a commanding 3-0 lead before the end of the first period.
Brahmas came out fierce in the second period as Hodge rifled a one-timer past Patterson to bring the game back within 3-1. The Cutthroats then went into prevent defense mode which, as usually happens, prevented them from hanging onto the lead
Fort Worth would draw back even after goals by Phil Fox and Joe Toilles less than a minute apart, leading to Armstrong taking his teams timeout. Fox capitalized on a turnover and ensuing 2-on-1 while Toiles blew a shot by Patterson from the right point.
After the timeout the cutthroats started to move their feet and even out the ice sheet and Smyth put home the puck after a nifty between the legs pass from Schwab to give the Cutthroats a 4-3 lead.
The Cutthroats would take a 5-3 lead when Lutes would finish a tic-tac-toe play from Zimmerman and Fulghum.
Patterson came on strong near the end, with the help of a strong Cutthroats defense in front of him to preserve the lead and the Cutthroats powered to the end for their second win in franchise history.
