I seriously want someone to explain to me what I'm suppose to be writing about while the Oilers are sitting around waiting for the playoffs to end.
Seriously. Someone enlighten me.
"Well you could always talk about Oilers prospects..."
Let's see...Martin Gernat is on the Edmonton Oil Kings, and he's been brilliant offensively during the WHL playoffs. I've also been told he's a defensive nightmare who takes all sorts of risks out there. Another Justin Schultz someday? Sad thing is, Gernat is 6' 5". If he muscled up and became, I dunno, 230lbs, he could crush people out there. Remember when the Oilers had Smith and Beukeboom, the "Two Towers"? How nice would it be if Marincin and Gernat turned into that.
And what about that Travis Ewanyk guy? Big, two-way forward. If he could have stayed healthy long enough, he would have played on Team Canada's World Junior team at Christmas. Ewanyk has 8pts in 16 playoff games this season, and is +9. At 6'2" 192lbs he could find himself playing in the Oilers Bottom 6 in a couple seasons.
David Musil has been an absolute beast for the Oil Kings in these playoffs. I consider him a strong candidate to play in the Oilers 5/6 pairing two seasons from now. Mitchell Moroz has been, ummm, disappointing, but what else is new? One goal in the playoffs so far, on a stacked Oil Kings team.
In the AHL playoffs, I hear Martin Marincin has been the best Barons player, which is good news. He might surprise people yet and make the Oilers big team next season. That's probably pushing it a bit, but the news with Marincin has been more good than bad. Hey, Tyler Pitlick is finally playing again. When did that happen? I just noticed his name in the stats. We're only three games into the Oklahoma City Barons playoffs, so it's hard to really say how people are doing. Mark Arcobello and Josh Green are leading the Barons in scoring, so that should tell you all you need to know about Oilers prospect depth currently at the AHL level.
Four Oilers going to the World Championships to play for Team Canada: Hall, Eberle, Schultz and Dubnyk. Jeff Petry is going to play for Team USA and Ladislav Smid is going to be suiting up for Czech Republic. As usual, I expect Smid to lead the tournament in bruises between the waste and feet. How many times did we see him hobble off the ice after blocking a shot this season?
Did they hold the draft lottery yet? Did we win?
God, this blog is killing me. Think of something original to say, quick.
Does anyone actually care about the World Championships? Does Canada ever win? See, that's how I can tell no one cares: I can't even tell you without looking it up if and when Canada has won. You'd think it would be a bigger deal here, especially in a city like Edmonton where Stanley Cup playoff hockey is more legend and actual.
I'm bored. Let's check the NHL scoreboard.
Ottawa beat Montreal 4-2. I'm not surprised. The Sens have been doing it with magic and mirrors all season. I think I predicted they were going to win this series? Yeah, Montreal is one of those teams that had a great regular season but no one could explain why or how. It's Price, Subban, and a bunch of scrubs.
Washington beat the Rangers 3-1, and my playoff bracket is starting to look pretty darn good. Ovenchicken had a goal, and he's gonna keep scoring a goal a game because he's proving a point this season. Don't ever get someone with that level of talent mad. It's okay though...After everyone starts calling him MVP and praising his play, he'll go back to sleep. So the Rangers dealt for Nash and traded away Gaborik. How's that working out so far?
St. Louis beat the Kings. Okay, my bracket had to have some red ink on it. It might as well be from the blood of the Stanley Cup Champions. It doesn't matter which team comes out of this series: They will make it to the cup finals. The Blues are so big and physical, they could likely suit up for the NFL once the NHL season ends.
And then we have Detroit mangling Anaheim tonight, which we all knew was going to happen. I'm not saying the Ducks can't win the series. It's just the Wings. You can't have a duck without the wings.
I think I wrote enough for this to be considered a blog. See you tomorrow, same bat time, same bat station.
