MELTZER'S MUSINGS: JUNE 1

1) The Oshawa Generals won the 2015 Memorial Cup with a 2-1 victory in overtime over the Kelowna Rockets in Quebec City on Sunday. Anthony Cirelli, a center prospect available in the 2015 NHL Draft, scored both goals for the Generals including the CHL championship winning goal at 1:28 of overtime.

2) The Flyers announced that the annual Trial on the Isle will take place on July 8, 2015, in Stone Harbor. The event, which usually takes place in the middle of the team's summer Development Camp, will begin approximately 8:45 a.m. at the firehouse located on 2nd Ave and 96th streets, From there, the Flyers prospects will go to the beach. As has become a tradition, the 2015 installment of the Trial will have water-sport competitions at the Yacht Club, a fan meet-and-greet autograph signing event at the Stone Harbor Elementary School and concludes with a beach volleyball mini-tourney beginning at 4 p.m. The schedule for the rest of the Development Camp will be announced at a later date.

3) Best of luck to Flyers Alum and former HockeyBuzz writer Brad Marsh in his upcoming participation in the 2015 Philadelphia International Cycling Classic, held in Manayunk on June 7. At age 57, Brad's fitness level would put many athletes half his age to shame.

Funny story: Last fall, I had lunch with Marshy at the Champps on Rt. 73 in Marlton, NJ. Knowing that Brad is big-time into health and fitness nowadays, I felt I should order the healthiest thing on the menu I could find -- so I ordered the spinach salad with grilled chicken, apples and dried cranberries.

Brad then promptly ordered the fish and chips!

Of course, he'd already worked out and would had been biking had the weather cooperated earlier in the day. He could spare the slight indulgence. My exercise for the day was limited to a backyard Nerf football catch with my son, Benjamin.

Another fun little memory from that day. There was a group of people wearing Flyers attire sitting at the adjacent table watching an Eagles game. Not one of them realized there was a guy sitting four feet away who played 514 regular season games for the Flyers: 30th in franchise history, and more games than the like of Paul Holmgren,Ron Hextall, Bernie Parent and Eric Lindros played for the club.

As we made small talk, I asked Brad if folks still recognize him when he is back in the Philly area. He said he's still recognized from time to time but it's usually when he is around the Skate Zone or otherwise be in context.
