With Bryce Salvador inevitably moving on the New Jersey Devils are in need of a new captain.
That doesn't mean they'll name one right away, though, and it's not out of the question that they won't have anyone dawning the "C" this season.
Via NJ.com: "There is no rush for this. I'm not sure we'll have one," general manager Ray Shero told NJ Advance Media. "Maybe we will. I don't want to paint myself into a corner by saying we'll have one and we don't, or we won't have one and we do."
Personally I think having a captain is less important than a lot of people make it out to be and I have no problem with the Devils taking their time in this process.
Ray Shero hasn't seen any Devils games live since taking over as GM and hasn't been around the team in-season to see how certain players react to different situations.
The same can be said about new head coach John Hynes.
That's not a knock on either guy at all. I like what both have said/done since taking over in their new roles but if they were to name a captain now they may as well pick a name out of a hat.
By putting off that decision they'll have the opportunity to see how these guys act in training camp/game situations, see how they practice and how they interact with their teammates off the ice.
Obviously those are important factors when considering who the new captain should be, and to this point neither Shero or Hynes have a handle on that, so there's no need to rush into naming a captain.
A decision will be made when they have a full grasp of the team and are confident they have chosen the right guy.
If and when they're ready to name a captain Andy Greene, Adam Henrique and Travis Zajac stand out as the three most logical candidates.
It'll be interesting to see if Shero and Hynes feel the same way if and when they are ready to put a "C" on someone's jersey.
