All things considered this is a pretty good deal for the Jets.
The money is a little more than I expected but you have to pay to keep high-end players and Dustin Byfuglien is just that.
Over the last few years he has emerged as one of the top blue liners in hockey and his ability to skate, put up points and dominate physically make him a very rare player.
He's entertaining, he's damn good, and the term isn't so long that it'll cripple the franchise as he plays out the end of the contract.

The AAV is higher than some would have thought but it comes that way because the Jets likely bought year(s) off the deal. At 5 years it's a steal for Winnipeg as the big man will be 36 when it's over. Even then if it comes to trading him they could retain salary and be fine should something evolve that way.
What is interesting to think is that how long could the deal have gone? Had they added 2 more years the AAV could have been lower but at what cost. Byfuglien compares very favourably to some of the best d-men in the league on a very ho-hum team. He's popular and marketable and that has value in a place like Winnipeg. It's a win-win and that's the way deals should work.

Yes I like it very much actually. DB is a beast and is completely dominant. Last couple of years probably bad, but that's the cost of doing business.
