Mason's Brick

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason would clearly like to have that goal back.

"That goal" by Washington's Jason Chimera, from center ice, gives a whole new meaning to the term "dump in", eh?

Jason Chimera's goal in Game 2 will dog Mason for the rest of his NHL career if the Flyers end up losing their round one series to the Capitals.

With help from Chimera, Washington defeated Philly in Game 2 and now lead their series two games to none.

Chimera's back breaker hurt the Flyers two-fold because of it's ugly appearance and the fact that it was the game winning goal.

With 17:34 left in the second, Chimera got his stick blade on Karl Alzner's dump-in attempt from over 100 feet away and redirected through Mason's wickets.

You see NHLers make this play to get pucks deep so that they can change forward lines and D pairs. "Pucks deep" and change is a strategy.

What Mason was thinking on that particular play? I don't know.

"Just a bad goal," Mason said. "I tried to put it to the corner, and I messed up."

At the lonely end of the rink, Caps goalie and Vezina Trophy favorite Braden Holtby has stopped 60 of 61 shots.

Nate Prosser's jock strap is still burning in Dallas.

The Minnesota Wild defenseman's ill advised pinch down the boards allowed Cody Eakin's bank pass to kiss off the wall to a streaking Jamie Benn in Game 2 on Saturday night.

Benn's game winning goal was poetry in motion.

I love watching the line of Tyler Seguin-Jamie Benn-Cody Eakin play together. They are one of the top five line trios in the NHL today. Look at the vision, smarts, sick skill and the patience exhibited on Benn's GWG.

Is there a more under rated player in today's NHL than Joe Pavelski?

He's the Rodney Dangerfield of the NHL.

He's short, doesn't skate exceptionally well, isn't flashy, nor sexy.

Pavelski doesn't give a crap about all of that stuff.

He's the inspirational leader of the most complete top to bottom San Jose Sharks team that we have seen in recent memory.

Pavelski scored his third goal in two games, added an assist on Logan Couture's PPG, and Martin Jones made 26 saves for the Sharks in their 2-1 win over the hostile Kings in Game 2 of the Western Conference First Round at Staples Center on Saturday.

The Sharks didn't flinch nor bat an eye to the cheap shots and constant barrage of body blows that the Kings threw at them. In fact, the Sharks have been counter-punching the bullies with punches to the face of their own.

The Kings look rattled by the resilience, toughness and togetherness of the Sharks.

"It was a hard-fought game, a man's game out there," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. "A lot of physical contact, a lot of battles, two teams fully invested and I thought our guys really did a good job of showing up and playing that type of game."

The Sharks are as scrappy and tough as their captain is.

Now would be a great time for Darryl Sutter to call out his stars like Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter, Marian Gaborik, Dustin Brown, and others.

Where have they been in this series?

Geno Malkin's surprise return to the Pittsburgh lineup wasn't enough inspiration for the Penguins to push the NY Rangers to a two games to none deficit in their first round series.

On Saturday afternoon, the Rangers erupted for four unanswered goals and pasted the Penguins 4-2 in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Consol Energy Center.

J.T. Miller had a hat trick of primary assists on second-period goals by Keith Yandle, Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello 4:14 apart to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.

Lundqvist made 29 saves for the win. He started Game 2 despite missing the final forty minutes of a 5-2 Game 1 loss Wednesday after taking Marc Staal's stick to his right eye.

The Rangers amped up their heavy game and out-hit the Penguins 57-25 in Game 2.

The Penguins D better start denying time and space on the Rangers forwards or else they will lose this first round series. Jeff Zatkoff was exposed by the fast and furious Rangers on Saturday. It's the responsibility of his D and forwards to protect the house at all times. The Pens did just that in Game 1 and failed to do so in Game 2.
