Calgary Flames: Wideman Won't Need Protection If There's An Expansion Draft

The Calgary Flames really need to move some money out this summer to give themselves more cap flexibility moving forward.

There are a few bad contracts on the team but in a perfect world they'd be able to find a taker for Dennis Wideman. Wideman only has one more year on his contract but carries a cap hit of $5.2 million. That's a lot of money and the Flames could surely find a better way to allocate it.

While a buyout could be a good last resort option, trading Wideman would certainly be preferable.

Finding a taker for Wideman was a bit of a long shot to begin with but, due to expansion talk, the chances of a possible trade were essentially non-existent. The reason for that is Wideman has a no-movement clause in his contract and would have to be protected by the owner of his rights - or so we thought.

Since Wideman will be an unrestricted free agent next July he could be exposed in the expansion draft despite his NMC.

A potential market for Wideman would be small but he has tallied 75 points in 131 regular season games over the last two seasons so perhaps he has some sort of value.

Whether that's the case or not, the fact Wideman won't need to be protected in a potential expansion draft is good news for the Flames regardless of where he suits up next season.
