The feeling in the Capitals room was as expected following their blowout over the Blue Jackets.

"I wanted to stop the streak," Justin Williams said. "Who wouldn't want to stop a streak?"

The Capitals exploded for 5 unanswered goals tonight as they shutout the visiting Blue Jackets at Verizon center, putting an end to the Jackets' historic 16-game winning streak.

The streak was one away from tying the longest winning streak in NHL history, which belongs to the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Sergei Bobrovsky gave up all five goals on just 23 shots before he was eventually pulled in the third period.

For Braden Holtby, he enjoyed his fourth shutout of the season stopping 29 shots.

The Capitals received scoring from all departments and dominated a majority of the game.

Daniel Winnik, John Carlson, Nate Schmidt, Andre Burakovsky and Williams all tallied.

Washington now has 11 goals from the defense in the last 13 games and six goals from five different defensemen in the last three games. Schmidt's goal was his first of the year and his first in 67 games, dating back to Jan. 7 of last year.

The Caps penalty killers were also on point again, this time killing all five Columbus power plays. Washington is third in the league in PK with an 86.9% kill rate.

Alex Ovechkin picked up an assist on Nate Schmidt's goal. The point brings Ovechkin just four points from 1,000. He will become just the 37th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points with one team.

Nicklas Backstrom also picked up an assist on Schmidt's goal, giving him one shy of 500 assists in his career.

The Capitals improve to 24-9-0-5 this season, good for fourth in the Metro and fifth overall in the league.
