QUICK HITS: JANUARY 29. 2017
1) Right winger Wayne Simmonds, the Flyers' lone representative at the 2017 NHL All-Star Game in Los Angeles took in three events at the Skills Competition on Saturday night. Most notably, he bagged a red-line goal in the four-line challenge (an event made memorable by Arizona Coyotes goalie Mike Smith scoring a full-ice goal from 180 feet), and was beaten in a skating race against the Florida Panthers' forward Vincent Trocheck in the Challenge Relay.
The NHL All-Star Game's 3-on-3 mini-tournament starts at 3:30 p.m. ET, and will be televised on NBC. Simmonds and the other Metro Division selections will play against the Atlantic Division, with the victor taking on the winner of the opening Pacific vs. Central game.
2) A first-period shorthanded goal by Scott Laughton and a third period power play tally by defenseman Will O'Neill were not enough for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Saturday night as the team went down to a 3-2 regulation loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The game was tied 1-1 at the first and second intermissions before the Sound Tigers (outshot 31-21 overall and 10-6 in the third period) sandwiched a pair of goals around O'Neill's temporary game-tier. Rookie defenseman Travis Sanheim assisted on both Phantoms goals. Anthony Stolarz stopped 18 of 21 shots in a losing cause. The Phantoms (29-12-2) now enter the AHL All-Star Break. The PPL Center hosts the 2017 All-Star Game, in which Phantoms forwards Taylor Leier and Jordan Weal as well as veteran defenseman T.J. Brennan are taking part.
3) Last week, former NHL goalie Steve Valiquette assembled an excellent breakdown video segment explaining what does and does not constitute a "bad" goal as would typically be assessed from the perspective of a goaltender or a goalie coach:
