From TSN Insider Darren Dreger, are keeping a watchful eye on the trade market for a top six forward and have the young assets to get it done, but who in the end will GM Marc Bergevin go after.
“Size up the middle has been a concern all season and becomes even more of an issue in the playoffs when you're trying to survive four grueling rounds. Alex Galchenyuk is Montreal's top center but adding Martin Hanzal, a towering 6-foot-6 center, would create a more formidable top six and allow Therrien the flexibility to slide Galchenyuk to left wing.
Bergevin isn't afraid to be aggressive, he's certainly proven that, but he's also not going to damage Montreal's future by giving up on another 6-foot-6 monster in 21-year-old winger Michael McCarron, who's currently seasoning in the AHL. Bergevin needs to create another way to land Hanzal or find a different number-two center at a more reasonable price.
THE BUZZ – If the Canadiens are balking at the high price being asked for centers like Hanzal or Matt Duchene, they may have to wait until the hours leading up to the March 1 deadline when teams that are uncertain of whether they’re buyers and sellers make their final determination.
Based on the number of teams looking for a top six center, Bergevin will have to give up one of his top prospect defenseman (Noah Juulsen or Michael Sergachev) or a former first rounder in McCarron to get a deal done.
From Sportsnet’s
Elliotte Friedman, names Boston, New York and Tampa as teams interested in defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk as a rental, but that teams are not interested in giving up tons for a player who will likely test the market this summer.
The Ducks at some point will swap one of their bevy of defenseman for forward help.
The Oilers have tried to trade wingers Jordan Eberle and Benoit Pouliot and have not found a market.
