On HNIC’s Saturday Night Headlines, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos and Elliotte Friedman reported the latest on Kevin Shattenkirk, Brian Boyle and Matt Duchene.
Kypreos indicated that it is a foregone conclusion that Shattenkirk will be moved before March 1, since Blues GM Doug Armstrong did not trade pending UFA’s David Backes or Troy Brouwer before last year’s deadline for future assets.
Shattenkirk reportedly has a list of a dozen teams that he would be interested in signing a long-term deal with, which includes the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.
THE BUZZ – The Blues have bounced back after dismissing Ken Hitchcock in favor of Mike Yeo, but losing Robby Fabbri to an ACL injury for the year makes a deep playoff run that much more improbable.
The sign-and-trade option does not appear to be realistic, since a contending team would likely not be interested in giving up players off their NHL roster to get Shattenkirk and a rental deal would not provide the type of compensation that Armstrong is hoping for.
Of the two Canadian teams mentioned, the Habs are the more likely to bite on Shattenkirk, since their window to win a Cup is the next couple years. Toronto is not interested in giving up young assets without a guarantee of getting the blueliner signed long-term.
Tampa Bay center Brian Boyle may be on the move if the Lightning fall out of the playoff race. Edmonton, Columbus and Toronto have all expressed interest in the pending UFA, but GM Steve Yzerman could be asking for as much as a first round pick for the 32-year-old.
THE BUZZ – The Lightning are just four points out of a playoff spot and have not really put things together this season. If they do make a run, it will have to be in the next couple weeks to prevent Yzerman from going into sell mode.
Edmonton is looking for veteran depth and size for a potential playoff run, and Boyle was a successful combo with current Oiler Benoit Pouliot on a checking line with the Rangers.
The big center also played for John Tortorella in New York, which would make interest from Columbus understandable.
Toronto has reportedly been looking to add a depth center, with journeyman Ben Smith currently their fourth line pivot.
Two teams that have not been mentioned in the swarm of clubs reportedly interested in Colorado’s Matt Duchene are the Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes.
The Penguins may be on the lookout for that elusive winger for Sidney Crosby and the Hurricanes are normally not in the mix for big impact trades but they are interested as well.
THE BUZZ – It would take a lot of creative cap management to fit Duchene’s $6 Million salary under the Penguins cap and probably cost them a young defenseman like Olli Maatta and more to make it possible.
The Hurricanes are stacked with young blueline prospects, which is exactly what the Avs are looking for in a deal for Duchene, who could help out Carolina’s young group of forwards (Teuvo Teravainen, Sebastien Aho and Elias Lindholm).
