TSN’s Darren Dreger said on Buffalo’s WGR 550 Radio that the value of Sabres winger Evander Kane is probably at it’s highest right now with his recent scoring success and on TSN 1050’s Leafs Lunch indicated that a team in the mix for St. Louis defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk says that the asking price for the pending UFA is a first round pick and a top prospect.
THE BUZZ – Kane has been red-hot the last month and with his tally on Thursday leads the Sabres with 19 goals.
Buffalo has been looking to move the 25-year-old winger since last summer after a series of off-the-ice incidents, but were probably not in a position to get good value for Kane because of those problems.
With a year left at $5.25 Million, Kane is not a long-term commitment like Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog and the asking price for both could get teams to kick tires on the Sabres forward.
The status of a Shattenkirk deal continues to be up in the air, since the Blues are in a fight for a playoff spot, but GM Doug Armstrong cannot pass up an opportunity to move the defenseman if he knows he will not be re-signing and can get assets for him.
The asking price of a top prospect and first round pick for a rental is steep, but a contending team like the NY Rangers (who Shattenkirk reportedly wants to play for) could afford that and have four months to get the blueliner signed to an extension.
Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reports that the Calgary Flames are looking into the possibility of trading for goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.
THE BUZZ – Calgary would be a perfect landing spot for Fleury, who are battling for a Western Conference playoff spot, have a young core group, but are looking for that #1 goalie.
Both Brian Elliott and Chad Johnson are free agents at the end of the season and could be moved to Pittsburgh as part of the deal to backup for Matt Murray.
The Flames were in the market for a starting goalie last summer and had permission to talk contract with Tampa’s Ben Bishop, but could not work out a deal.
