On HNIC’s Saturday Night Headlines, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos and Elliotte Friedman reported the latest on Curtis Lazar.

Lazar’s agent spoke to Sens GM Pierre Dorion over the weekend and the gist of the conversation was that the winger wants to play, whether in Ottawa or elsewhere, but the Sens are not anxious to move the youngster unless they get fair value.

THE BUZZ – With Bobby Ryan suffering a finger injury in Toronto on Saturday and Mark Stone getting his bell rung from a Jacob Trouba head hit on Sunday, it is likely that Lazar gets his chance to play and will not be on the move before March 1, but the Sens may be looking for other reinforcements as well.

From Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs are among the teams that have shown interest in St. Louis defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, but the price of a high-end prospect, a first-round pick and another asset continues to scare teams off, since it is believed the 28-year-old blueliner will be heading to free agency, no matter where he is traded to.

THE BUZZ – The question is which side will blink when it comes to the asking price for in Shattenkirk. The price that GM Doug Armstong is asking is exorbitant for a player with years left on his contract, let alone a rental.

The Rangers could use Shattenkirk before the trade deadline for their playoff run in the East and work on getting a contract done with the defenseman before July 1, but a young club like the Maple Leafs, who have the financial wherewithal to sign the defenseman to a long-term contract but are not an imminent contender would likely wait until the summer and not give up assets.

From Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News:

Tim Murray and Minnesota counterpart Chuck Fletcher love to do deals and they might be at it again. There's been several reports the last few days about the Sabres hanging around the Wild, and around Minnesota's Iowa affiliate.

The Sabres, of course, need defensemen, both at the NHL and prospect level.

THE BUZZ – The Sabres have a crying need on the blueline, with Cody Franson and Dmitri Kulikov likely not returning next season and a lack of depth that had journeymen Justin Falk and Taylor Fedun playing in the NHL instead of being in AHL Rochester most of the season.

Minnesota faces a dilemma with the upcoming expansion draft with upwards of six quality defensemen on their roster and being able to protect four at most.
