Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports the Sens GM Pierre Dorion has his sights on adding a forward before Wednesday, but the price for an impact top-six like Matt Duchene is so steep that he is looking for more economical options.
“The Senators have no interest in giving up defenseman Cody Ceci as part of any trade and, the belief is, if the Avs are going to move Duchene to Ottawa that’s exactly what they want in return (along with either prospect Thomas Chabot or Colin White, plus another piece).”
THE BUZZ – It is going more apparent as March 1 approaches that Colorado GM Joe Sakic is hoping that another club is so desperate to get a top-six forward that they are prepared to give over a young NHL defenseman (which every team is looking for) and their top two prospects.
A Duchene deal appears to be a better fit for the summer, after teams have added more organizational depth through the draft and free agency and more free to give up what Colorado is looking for.
”League executives told Postmedia Friday the Senators are among five or six teams that have held talks with the Arizona Coyotes about unrestricted free-agent centre Martin Hanzal.
A league executive told Postmedia that Arizona GM John Chayka is “asking (for) the moon” in exchange for Hanzal, who has 10 goals and 25 points.
That’s why the Senators' best bet to add depth might be a rental.
Dorion has talked to pretty much every team over the last couple of weeks, so you would have to think he’s sniffed around on the likes of rental forwards Thomas Vanek of Detroit, Dallas’ Jiri Hudler and Winnipeg’s Drew Stafford.”
THE BUZZ – Hanzal’s price tag may not be at Duchene level (who is under contract until 2019), but the reported asking price is a high draft pick and prospect.
Montreal has reportedly expressed interest in the big center. One thing that teams do at deadline time is feign interest in a player so that a competitor has to pay more to acquire them. Not to say that is what is happening with the Sens and Hanzal, but it is possible.
Ottawa owner Eugene Melnyk has given Dorion the go-ahead to add a player to fill in for injured forwards Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman.
Both Vanek and Stafford have experience in the Atlantic Division and will likely cost less than Hanzal.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are running out of time to determine whether to be buyers or sellers before Wednesday. In the wake of the news that Kevin Shattenkirk rejected a sign-and-trade with the Lightning,
Tampa Bay Times reporter Joe Smith thinks it is possible that GM Steve Yzerman may explore other options.
“Yzerman said he's not looking for a rental, but maybe with the additional $5.8 million in cap space he gets if Ryan Callahan goes on long-term injured reserve, he'd re-consider options.”
“Wouldn't be surprised if Yzerman continues to work to find another defensemen by Wednesday. It just might not be Shattenkirk.”
THE BUZZ – The decision to go for Shattenkirk as a rental or another blueliner may be moot, since Tampa is six points in back of the second wild card/third place in the Atlantic and have only one game between now and March 1.
If they fall behind eight or more points behind Toronto, Boston and the NY Islanders, you may see Yzerman go the opposite direction and sell off the expiring contracts of Ben Bishop and Brian Boyle.
TSN’s Farhan Lalji reports that Canucks forward Jannik Hansen has submitted a list of eight teams he would accept a trade to, which include seven teams currently in a playoff position and one preferred destination.
THE BUZZ – Hansen has been with Vancouver since 2007, scored a career-high 22 goals in 2015-16 and has another year on his contract at $2.5 Million. The Canucks are trying to rebuild on the fly and see an opportunity to cash in on a trade market short on forwards.
With Tomas Jurco bringing back a third round pick for Detroit and Patrick Eaves getting a conditional 1st/2nd for Dallas, GM Jim Benning may be able to get a second round pick for the 30-year-old.
