The New Jersey Devils have signed Jimmy Hayes to a one-year contract worth $700,000.
The 6'5', 27-year-old winger was in camp on a tryout basis and, obviously, impressed management enough to earn a contract.
He played in a team-high five preseason games and tallied three points, 15 shots, and 19 scoring chances.
His underlying numbers were pretty good, too, as the Devils controlled ~52% of the shot attempts and ~56% of the scoring chances with him on the ice at 5v5.
Preseason is preseason, but he showed up and performed while some of the younger players expected to push for spots -- such as Blake Speers and Michael McLeod -- underwhelmed. As a result, it is Hayes who will be sticking around.
Last season was an absolute disaster for Hayes, but he averaged 36 points per 82 games played over the two prior years so he should be a useful contributor in the bottom-6.
