I took the day off from pucks and RFAs on Friday.
I had to. I needed the mental health day.
To me, heavy metal is one of the five basic food groups. It's what I eat to maintain my boyish good looks. I can't wait to see Black Sabbath, with Ronnie James Dio and Queensryche in a couple of weeks. The Heaven and Hell Tour will be a highlight of my Summer.
The Family Values Tour roared into Darien Lake, smack dab between Buffalo and Rochester.
It brought with it its own carnival midway, complete with headless women and the world's biggest rat.
I got my ass kicked at the Guitar Hero tent. I had never played the game in my life and I was humbled at my first attempt at "Sweet Child o' Mine". Hell, I got a free mercy t-shirt outta the deal!
What a day it was! Temps hovered around 30 celcius (90 in the States) all day long. Thank the heavens for the 15-20 mph breeze, or else we'd have melted into the ashphalt!
The side stage started pulsing and pounding at 2pm. Five Finger Death Punch got me in the mood with an in-your-face set of molten metal.
On the mainstage, Flyleaf reall impressed me. Their lead singer, Lacy, is a petite young leady, but man she can wail. They brought their A game on "Fully Alive".
Hellyeah, is a modern day AllStar band, as it features players from both Pantera and Mudvayne. The boys melted my face with a stunning and poignant rendidtion of Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy". Metallica covered the classic on "Garage Inc.", and Hellyeah have given it a new millenium makeover !
I was lucky enough to meet Amy Lee and her band, Evanescence, before they hit the stage at 7:50. Wonderful lady, and a multi-talented group. I've never herad them play live, however, I will seek them out next time they hit the road. The lady sang her ass off, and got the house on its feet with "Wake Me Up Inside", "Don't Cry To Me", for KORN.
What more can be said about Jonathon Davis and KORN?
The newly re-configured ubre group peeled what was left of the teflon and paint off the amphitheatre tent!
They blistered through a two hour set in break-neck fashion!
"Freak On A Leash" was superb!
Nice to see bassist Fieldy has slimmed down. He told me earlier in the day that he recently committed to working out and eating better. He's lost 45 pounds and he's rocked up.
Fieldy and Davis are primetime players, and they sent 13,000 or so metal heads home with stiff necks!
Rock on!
