In this edition of the hotstove, we discuss whether the struggling Buffalo Sabres should trade Evander Kane as a rental or try to re-sign him long-term.

I think the Sabres should focus on re-signing Evander Kane.
He leads the team in goals, points, shots, scoring chances, and has been the most dangerous and consistent Sabre by a country mile.
I mean, look at the gap between Kane and the next closest Sabre when it comes to generating chances at 5v5.
Kane is only 26 so he still has plenty of good years ahead of him – it's not as if his production is about to dip significantly – and is probably worth keeping around.
The Sabres are a bad team and still rebuilding but, at some point, they have to focus on plugging holes rather than moving their best players and creating more.

Guys with 30 goal talent don't grow on trees, and Kane is one of those guys when he is healthy. He has always been a player who left me wanting more, but he is a better option than what would be gotten in return in a trade, and at 26 he is still fairly young and has some good years left.
Obviously, that is dependent on being able to come to terms on a contract that makes sense for both sides, but I believe signing an extension would be the right route to take with Evander Kane.
