Canes Lose Twice To Sabres |

Buffalo Sabres assistant general manager Steve Greeley has interviewed twice for the vacant Carolina Hurricanes job. The position became available in March when Canes owner Tom Dunedin reassigned Ron Francis to another post inside the organization.
According to a report from Elliotte Friedman, Greeley will not be accepting the Canes GM position.
This marks the second time the Hurricanes lost to the Sabres in the past week. On Saturday night in Toronto, the Sabres won the NHL Draft Lottery. Carolina finished second. Montreal finished in third place.
Swedish whiz kid defenseman Rasmus Dahlin will no doubt be Buffalo’s numero uno selection at the NHL Draft in Dallas in June.
Meanwhile in Raleigh, Canes President Don Waddell will carry the dual portfolio of GM-Prez until Dundon finds an experienced GM who is willing to work for a hands-on owner for reportedly lower wages ($400K AAV).
I’m told Waddell targeted Greeley and veteran hockey man Rick Dudley for the Carolina GM job. Dudley is under contract with the Montreal Canadiens. Dudley and Waddell are old friends and worked together at the Atlanta Thrashers. Dudley makes his home in a northern suburb of Buffalo.
Now, Dundon and Greeley part ways after failing to reach a contract agreement..
Jason Botterill hired Greeley last June along with AGM Randy Sexton. Why would Greeley want to leave a great situation in Buffalo now? He’s only 37 years old and is playing an integral role in the Buffalo rebuild. Why leave now when Buffalo has the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft?
Botterill relies heavily on Greeley to lead the Sabres pro scouting team and player development. Greeley is also tasked with the procurement of talent from the NCAA and European pro leagues.
Prior to joining Botterill’s cabinet in Buffalo, Greeley spent two seasons as the assistant director of player personnel with the New York Rangers. Before his tenure with the Rangers, Greeley spent two seasons as an associate coach at Boston University, where he played a vital role in the school's recruiting process. Greeley also spent seven seasons (2006-07 to 2012-13) in the scouting department for the Los Angeles Kings and served as a regional scout for the U.S. National Team Development Program from 2009 to 2012.

Team Canada has named its leadership group from the upcoming IIHF World Championships which begin in Denmark next week.
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid will wear the “C” for Canada. Buffalo Sabres leader Ryan O’Reilly will wear an “A”. St. Louis Blues forward Brayden Schenn will also wear an “A”.
O’Reilly, a two-time IIHF World gold-medallist (2015, 2016), also served as an alternate captain in 2016. Schenn won gold in 2015 with O’Reilly, and both players added silver medals in 2017.
“We have a mix of youth and veterans on our team, and the three players chosen to wear a letter know what it takes to be successful in international competition and that will help us be successful in our ultimate goal,” said head coach Bill Peters (Three Hills, Alta./Calgary, NHL).
