Quiet Ducks quietly sign Luke Schenn

The Anaheim Ducks are the forgotten team out west. With the San Jose Sharks, L.A. Kings, Arizona Coyotes and even the Calgary Flames making moves to improve their squads - the Ducks have done very little to "improve" the roster.

But they did address a very specific need. Anaheim found a solid replacement for the holes left by the departure of Kevin Bieksa and Francois Beauchemin. While other GM's lost their minds during the free agent madness that was this past Sunday, Bob Murray quietly filled a hole.

Luk Schenn signed a one-year, $800,000 deal with the Ducks, per Frank Seravalli of TSN. The Ducks have yet to announce the deal but that's more of a formality at this point.

The former number five overall pick was traded for James van Riemsdyk - one of the key players in Sunday's cash grab. Schenn is just hoping to play in a meaningful hockey game again. He's been in Arizona the last couple of seasons.

The Ducks bread and butter is their defense and this signing further strengthens that point. Schenn is a solid, hardnose defender that compliments the group that's already in place. Is he the best defender, no? Is he the type of player we dreamed of when Murray voided changes in his end of season gas-bagging? No! But, it is a hole and it's filled. Remember even potholes need to be filled.

What about the rest of the team? What about the offense? What about...... blah blah?

Don't fret Anaheim faithful. The Ducks have a direction and it appears to be one that other teams have employed successfully over the last couple of seasons. Get younger and build from within. They added Anton Rodin, who had been with Canucks. The quick playmaker is at least an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle. Injuries have slowed his progression, but maybe, just maybe he can find a healthy home in So Cal.

The summer is still young and Murray did vow to make changes. I guess we will have to sit quietly and wave the orange towels until the biggness happens.
