In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the worst free agent signings made thus far.

Todd Cordell

There are a lot of options but it's tough to go against Jay Beagle.

He has averaged 20 points per 82 games played throughout his career. As a soon to be 33-year-old, his production surely has a better chance of decreasing than increasing in the coming years.

Beagle has a reputation as a quality defender and penalty killer but the numbers suggest it may not be warranted.

Giving plenty of term, and money, to an overrated 4th line center on the back-9 of his career is a bad idea. I'm sure that will become crystal clear sooner than later.

Sean Maloughney

Both Roussel and Beagle are terrible moves by a GM that had money burning a hole in his pocket and felt he had to spend it. The only thing worse than that is the Jack Johnson signing.

A 5 year deal for an offensive defenseman who no longer produces offense is a bad deal unto itself. What makes it the worst free agency signing is the fact that Pittsburgh had to move out Conor Sheary and Matt Hunwick in order to do it.

At 3 million Sheary wasn't on a bargain deal but was a solid middle 6 option and Hunwick produced one less point than Johnson...playing 30 fewer games.

I'm sure Rutherford knows what he is doing... I'm betting in year 3 of this contract, the 34 year old Johnson will really hit his stride.
