In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on Marc-Andre Fleury's three-year, $7 million (annually) extension with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Vegas is buying really high here.

Fleury set a new career high for regular season save percentage (.927) and he matched it in the playoffs, which was his best post-season output in more than a decade.

You could certainly argue he was worth $7 million in 2017-18 but I very much doubt that will be the case from 2019-22 in his 35, 36, and 37-year-old seasons.

With Fleury so in love with Vegas, and few teams in need of quality goaltenders, I don't know why the Golden Knights didn't wait on his numbers to inevitably dip next season and then re-sign him after at a more affordable rate.

Marc-Andre Fleury is not going to ever be the player he was last year. Last year he had one of the best seasons anyone has ever had. He led his team way farther than they had any right to go, and for three rounds of the playoffs he was an all-time great. HIs new contract is both crazy and perfect. It's crazy because he can't live up to it, and he'll be paid to be a much better goalie than he has any chance of being. But it's perfect because he deserves to be compensated for what he accomplished in the 2017-18 season.

I like this contract as a reward for excellence but if anyone is expecting future value I fear they will be disappointed.

Fleury at 7 million is an overpayment in any other market. In fact it’s still an overpayment in Vegas but they have he cap space for a little bit anyway. Fleury is unlikely IMO to reproduce what he did last season and the age curve will be catching up to him soon.

That being said he was the face of that franchise and a huge benefit for the team on and off the ice. Makes sense for them but eve then it’s still risky if they don’t develop some one along they way in the next three years.
