The Arizona Coyotes have signed Christian Dvorak to a six year contract extension.

If true, that makes this a very good signing. Dvorak is 22 and is a second round pick from 2014. He appears to be a quality NHL forward, but the Coyotes have been so bad its hard to get a read on his game.

He's scored 15 goals in back to back years, but its questionable what his potential is, since the Coyotes of last year would make anyone's stats look bad.

Dvorak was only slightly negative in possession relative to his teammates, and he played with a rotating cast of players, but did seem to get a lot of the defensive assignments as well.

Late in the year he was paired with Richard Panik to moderate success.

Really, from a talent perspective, Dvorak looks like a keeper. The long term commitment is off set by an extremely palatable $4.45 cap hit, making this a low risk high reward play.

If all you ever get out of Dvorak is 15 goals and a decent middle of the lineup player, this will probably not be a great deal, but I suspect he's got quite a bit of room to improve over the next two seasons and that this will end up looking, at worst, like a perfectly fine contract.

The upside is that if Dvorak turns into the 25 goal two-way force reminiscent of Ryan O'Reilly that the Coyotes are hoping for, then this is an absolute steal.

Time will tell, but its a smart risk vs reward deal as of today.
