Big news today in the NHL. The Tampa Bay Lightning have a new general manager. That’s right, Steve Yzerman is stepping down from his position.

Julien Brisebois has been an assistant general manager for some time and I’m guessing that a lot of teams have been hoping for him to eventually leave his post in Tampa Bay to enter the market for their teams. It’s not happening.

Why would Steve Yzerman step down? He has one year on his contract that he is going to honor. Ken Holland in Detroit also has one more year left on his contract in Detroit. My initial thought when I read the news was to link Steve Yzerman with his Red Wings club. However, I think there’s a much better option available in the same time frame.

Seattle’s new NHL team is currently on pace to start playing in 2020-2021. After watching how Vegas and George McPhee did in year on with the Golden Knights it would be tough to ignore that job opening. Yzerman has done a very good job in Tampa Bay and he would be one of the best candidates to take over the new NHL team. By all accounts the draft rules aren’t going to be very different which means whoever takes the team over will have a good chance at building a quality team from scratch. When compared to the mess Ken Holland has created in Detroit there is nothing appealing about going back to the city that Yzerman played for.
