Wrapup: Flyers 3 - Islanders 1

Playing the second game of three consecutive preseason games against the New York Islanders, the Philadelphia Flyers earned a 3-1 victory at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday night. Unlike Sunday's 3-0 loss at Nassau Coliseum, the Flyers dressed many of their veteran regulars. They also got strong performances from several of the young players bidding to earn roster spots.

Shayne Gostisbehere scored a pair of power play goals for Philadelphia. The Flyers went 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Mikhail Vorobyev, who turned in a sold all-around effort, opened the scoring in the first period. One shift earlier, Tyrell Goulbourne dropped the gloves with the much larger Ross Johnston.

Michal Neuvirth stopped eight of nine shots and played the first 30:05 of the game. Highly touted prospect Carter Hart took over midway through the second period, and stopped all 11 shots he faced.

An in-depth game wrapup is available on the Flyers' official website.

Gameday: Flyers @ NYI

If one includes the Rookies Game, the Flyers and Islanders will meet for the fourth time in four different venues when the teams meet up again on Tuesday night; this time at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. On Wednesday night, the Flyers will finally see a different opponent when they travel to Madison Square Garden to play the New York Rangers.

On Tuesday, the Flyers will hold a 10 a.m. morning skate in Voorhees, and then bus to Brooklyn. The non-participants in the game will practice at noon. On Monday, Wayne Simmonds and Brian Elliott took maintenance days. Flyers general manager Ron Hextall reported that Travis Sanheim (upper-body injury) would miss about a week and be off the ice for a couple days before he resumes skating. Andrew MacDonald (lower-body injury) may be a bit ahead of his initial six-week timetable to be cleared to play.

The Flyers made their first three roster cuts on Monday: Matthew Strome was returned to Hamilton (OHL), Maksim Sushko was returned to Owen Sound, and Wyatte Wylie was returned to Everett (WHL). Also, goalie Liam Hughes (who had a good camp but was facing long odds) was released from his ATO.

Game time at the Barclays Center on Tuesday is 7 p.m. EDT. The game will not be televised but will be available on radio at 97.5 The Fanatic and simulcasted online at FlyersRadio247.com.
