No need to recap that events of that snooze-fest last night at the Bell MTS Centre. A 3/4 full building on a Monday night was not much for atmosphere and neither team provided much excitement as the two division rivals iced rosters interesting enough to garner intrigue.

The standouts:

Laurent Brossoit- stopped 39 of 40 shots and played much like his friend and Jets starter Connor Hellebuyck. His positioning was strong and he played a calm style keeping square to the shooter and not overreacting to the play in front of him. Was very solid tracking the puck in scrambles too and maybe only had one gaffe handling it behind the net. He was good.

Kristian Vesalianen- had 16 minutes of ice including 4:39 on the PP but no shots on net. As many pointed out he was quick to return on back check. As game went on he became more noticeable and put himself in the play more. Was picking up on reads and seemed to gel a bit with Roslovic

Jack Roslovic- centre the '2nd' line with Perreault and managed the game well. He seemed to have some good chemistry with Vesalainen and had his usual smart reads.

Perreault- He does what he does, feisty, smart and basically a huge pain in the ass to play against.

Petan- seemed to have some trouble with Lemieux on reads at the start and had some 'jimmy hands' with the puck. Was looking to create but he seems to be a fish out of water when trying to play Maurice's system. Lots of skill but he may not be a match for this coach.

Lemieux- gets full marks for driving the net frequently and trying to be a greasy pest. Had some trouble with reads in defensive zone but will get credit for dropping the gloves. Not sure he's going to ever crack this roster.

Dano- played a smart game getting the opening goal and was relatively dangerous all night. I'm always curious what he could do if he was given some shifts with better players.

Little- as advertised and likely the second line centre until there's reason not to be because a better option (Roslovic) comes along.

Ehlers- had the razzle dazzle last night and might have been a bit guilty of overplaying at times. Speed to burn and he was basically what every one remembers him as- dynamic.

Laine- only really unloaded one big shot that probably gave Hammond nightmares. Looks a bit more mobile than last year with a slightly different and improved stride.

Appleton- moments of brilliance but did not stand out in any meaningful way

Kerdiles- who?

Giffith- see above

Defense



Byfuglien- he was good Buff, a bit physical, some drive and skated well. You could hear him calling the plays.

Morrow- He scored, well sort of. Had a decent game and bailed out Brossoit once and did his job without being too fancy.

Chiarot- was not his best game but it's preseason. He should be better by now in terms of reliability.

Niku- loved his skating and reads for most of the game. It will be interesting to see if he makes the roster because he has the skill to be there but will Maurice want him to get more ice time in AHL?

Poolman- pretty unremarkable and not his best game. Again, reads are everything and he was having trouble.

Stanley- he can see the game well, he can use his body well, he's smart with his stick and he knows what to do but his feet do not seem to want to follow him with any speed at all.


Onwards to Friday when the Jets host the Flames and we likely see the other half of the roster. It's pre-season and this roster is largely complete with but a few options for the bottom lines and press box. That's the reality of the cycle the Jets are in.
