Barely into preseason play, the Detroit Red Wings find themselves down another key veteran. Defenseman Mike Green is out with a viral infection in his liver and it’s not known at this time when he might be back on the ice.
“He’s not available right now,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill told Mlive.com. “He’s got a virus that attacked his liver, so he’s seen an infectious disease person today and we should know more here in the next little bit. I don’t know how long he’s going to be out. I don’t know the totality of it.”
Green underwent neck surgery in the summer and looked to be all healed up and ready to get back to work when training camp opened.
“The day before camp he saw the doctor in New York on his neck, he was totally cleared, cleared for contract,” Detroit GM Ken Holland said. “The plan was to ramp him up and play him the two of the last three preseason games.
“As we got into camp and were on the ice two, three, four days, he didn’t feel like he had his energy. He felt a little bit fatigued. Our doctors did some initial work, and now we’re trying to get him to see a doctor (to) gather more information.
“Our doctors have told him to stay off the ice until we know exactly why he doesn’t quite feel like he’s got all his energy”
An unrestricted free agent, Green opted to stay with the Wings, signing a two-year, $10.75-million deal. Green led the Wings back end last season with 33 points in 66 games.
“Obviously it’s going to be a big loss to lose him. Greener’s our teammate and our friend, so we just want him to be healthy, whatever form that is,” Detroit defenseman Trevor Daley said. “As long as he’s healthy and ready to come back, I’ll be happy with that.”
The Wings already said goodbye to captain Henrik Zetterberg, who announced at the start of training camp that a degenerative back condition was ending his NHL career.
